Only a very small patch of pinkish-red is seen in the lower belly to justify the name of this woodpecker. These birds are always a unique and welcome addition at the bird feeder. I saw this one early one morning and knew I must paint him. I've been surprized at how few artists have chosen these amazing birds for their subject. I just love them.
